Manuela Riedo Foundation: Have these people latched onto a young girl's rape and murder to enrich themselves?

If the venue normally costs €2,000 to hire … well then simply charge €3,000 … and give the crooked philanthropist back €500 … and you're also up €500 … everyone wins, except the rape victims and their families, and the gullible donors

The Galway natives aren’t slow off the mark when it comes to piggybacking on something that might make them easy money. And, as such, they weren’t long in seeing that there might be easy pickings in the aftermath of young Manuela Riedo’s rape and murder.

This young Swiss girl was beaten, raped and slaughtered in Galway, Ireland on what was her first trip away from home without her parents. Her attacker, Gerald Barry, had just six months before sexually assaulted a young French student a few streets away from where he killed Manuela.

Two European ladies, after hearing rumours about funds being misappropriated in the Manuela Riedo Foundation (MRF), traveled to Galway to see for themselves what the organisers of this Irish charity were like. The MRF came to these ladies’ attention while they were doing research into rape and sexual assault in Ireland – probably because of the high profile of its eponymous victim’s brutal death. They were looking into such as: how rape victims are treated by the police, their community, preventative measures, and to what extent is aftercare or counseling available1.

Their initial enquiries gave the impression that the managers of the MRF weren’t dedicated to spending the substantial part of their monetary intake on worthy causes. Seemingly in Galway there’s enormous logistics involved in getting money from the donor to the rape crisis center or whatever beneficiaries are involved: of course, the more complicated the logistics the higher the fees and expenses.

As if this wasn’t bad enough they also heard rumours telling of another act of uniquely Irish fraudulence. It was claimed fairly large sums of money, cash that’s on top of hire charges already agreed upon, passes between this charity and the managers or owners of premises where fundraising events are held. 

One possible way this might work is where the owner of a premises is eager to have the profits (alcoholic drinks and catering, etc) that hosting one of the MRF fundraising events would bring. To do this the publican or hotel owner would charge, and be paid, an exorbitant fee for the hire of their premises; the excess cash would mean it’d be easy to part with some of it, and it could be “donated” back to the person, or some of the people, who had brought them the MRF's business in the first place.

Finally there’s the vile rumours about the conduct of patrons at MRF fundraising events. The researchers cited one lady who attended one: “Drunkenness and arrogant smugness, you would think it was an event celebrating a football win. I was hit-on twice by two revolting looking inebriated middle aged men, one of whom was wearing a wedding ring. If this is their high society I wouldn’t like to see what their low is.”

After speaking with various people, some of whom were involved in MRF, the researchers expressed the view that: “it seems to be not very much more than a milch cow for the founders … a means to enrich themselves while swanning around affecting importance.”  They went on to say: “it’s appalling that they are so barefaced and hardened to jump on the memory of a murdered rape victim and practically milk it for their own profit and gratification.”

These two researchers were left believing this Irish charity’s creation had more to do with assisting the organisers than it had to do with the alleviation of rape victim’s suffering or the prevention of further rapes or sexual assaults. They're probably correct but there’s most likely also another reason why this charity was set up in the very public aftermath of Manuela Riedo’s savage rape and murder.

I believe that the main reason this charity came into being had nothing to do with the murdered girl or any rape victim, but had all to do with currying favour with would-be European and North American tourists. When it came to light that Manuela Riedo’s rapist and murderer, Gerald Barry, had been, from the age of seventeen, a frequent sexually motivated assaulter on the streets of western-Ireland people were disgusted and stayed away in droves – when this is taken in correlation with the atrocious aftermath of a recent rape in Kerry you’d be mad to holiday here or allow your offspring to do so.

This year, for instance, most hotels and B&Bs were almost empty in the west and south-west of Ireland – aside from handouts from Gr Britain and the EU the only way these backward people have of earning money is through tourism. And so the tourist dependent business community in the west of Ireland had to do something that might bring the money spending tourists back.

If they had set up this charity with the sole intention of relieving the pain and suffering that rape victims and their families suffer I’d give them all due respect. But, having heard what the two researchers uncovered, and knowing the Galway natives like the back of my hand, I don’t think they’re due any respect. Because they’re simply keeping-up the shameless way of behaving they were famed for in the 19th century – before Political Correctness grabbed the Western World by the gonads (pictured right).

Savages wouldn’t be capable of the atrocious aftermath of two particular rapes in south-west Ireland, the latest being where the entire population of a town, Listowel, queued up in court to shake a rapist’s hand and commiserate with him in lament of his conviction. And of course paedophiles, regardless of Ireland being mired in their filthy acts for decades, also get it easy: the US’s FBI informed the Irish police that they had tracked Brian Curtin’s credit card details on the databases of paedophilic websites. But Brian Curtin walked away without proper trial and laughed all the way to the next image of a young child being sexually abused.
